Tracking the Medal Count - Beijing 2022

Updated: Jul 28

I'll be using this post to keep track of the medal count throughout the Beijing 2022 Olympics. Every day I'll add a new update to this post highlighting the top five countries in the medal count standings, the numbers of medals each top country has, and any spectacular Team USA news. At the end of the Olympics, I'll wrap up by posting the top ten countries from the final medal count.

*All dates/times in EST unless otherwise noted.

02/21/2022 Update:

The flag was handed over, the flame was extinguished, and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games are officially closed. It's been a truly unforgettable Olympics and I thank everyone who has been reading for allowing me to practice sharing my love of the Olympics. I'll be writing some recap/looking back commentary soon, so keep an eye out for that.

Team USA won a few more medals before leaving Beijing. Freestyle skier Davis Wise brought home silver in the men's halfpipe event, with US skier Alex Ferreira winning bronze. Former Team USA skier Gus Kenworthy also competed in the men's halfpipe and opted to honor his mother by competing for Team Great Britain in this Games. Kenworthy placed 8th.

Elana Meyers Taylor and Sylvia Hoffman won bronze in the two-woman bobsled event. This gave Meyers Taylor her historic fifth winter Olympic medal, making her the most decorated Black winter Olympian in history. After the win, it was announced that Meyers Taylor had been elected as flagbearer for the closing ceremony for Team USA. Meyers Taylor was originally slated to carry the flag in the opening ceremony, but had to have Brittany Bowe step in for her after she tested positive for COVID-19.

Finally, cross-country skier Jessie Diggins made history again as she became the first non-European to bring home a medal in the 30km freestyle mass start when she won silver in the event. This medal also made Diggins the only American to bring back multiple cross-country medals from the same Olympics and the first woman to win a distance medal in cross-country skiing for Team USA. Diggins accomplished all of this having barely recovered from food poisoning, as she revealed that she had been battling food poisoning just 30 hours before the competition. Diggins received her medal during the closing ceremony, as is tradition for medalists in the final competitions of the Games.

The closing ceremony continued the theme of unity that was seen in the opening ceremony.

For the hand-over ceremony, the Olympic flag was lowered from its spot on the flagpole as a choir of children sang the Olympic anthem. An Olympic flag was then brought to the stage and handed to the mayor of Beijing to be passed to IOC President Thomas Bach, who then passed it to the mayors of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, the cities that will jointly host the 2026 winter Olympics. This ceremony represents Beijing relinquishing the responsibilities of the Olympics and those responsibilities being bestowed upon Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.

In his closing statements, Thomas Bach stated that he hoped world leaders were inspired by the athletes' example of solidarity and peace. This statement could potentially be a subtle reference to issues such as Russia's military presence near the boarder of Ukraine and China's reported discrimination against the Uyghur muslims. Bach also urged the international community to give all people around the world equal access to vaccines and called for athletes to assemble four years from now for the 25th Milano Cortina Olympic Winter Games.

Team USA finished 5th overall in the medals race. Here are the top ten from the final medal count:

1. Norway -- 16 gold, 8 silver, 13 bronze, 37 total

2. Russian Olympic Committee -- 6 gold, 12 silver, 14 bronze, 32 total

3. Germany -- 12 gold, 10 silver, 5 bronze, 27 total

4. Canada -- 4 gold, 8 silver, 14 bronze, 26 total

5. United States -- 8 gold, 10 silver, 7 bronze, 25 total

6. Sweden -- 8 gold, 5 silver, 5 bronze, 18 total

7. Austria -- 7 gold, 7 silver, 4 bronze, 18 total

8. Japan -- 3 gold, 6 silver, 9 bronze, 18 total

9. Netherlands -- 8 gold, 5 silver, 4 bronze, 17 total

10. Italy -- 2 gold, 7 silver, 8 bronze, 17 total

My source for the medal standings was NBC Olympics.

I'm sad to see the Games go, but I know the memories made by both the athletes and the viewers will last forever. I'll try to do some commentary for the 2024 summer Olympics in Paris and you can bet your hat I'll be back behind the keyboard for the 2026 winter Games. Along with this, don't forget to keep a look out for my post-Olympics commentary that I hope to be posting in the next few weeks. However, for now, I must sign off from my 2022 Olympic coverage.

Until 2026!

02/17/2022 Update:

Team USA once again has two new medals!

Speedskater Brittany Bowe won bronze in the women's 1000m yesterday. Bowe has made headlines multiple times during the Olympic cycle. She first made news when she gave up her spot in the women's 500m race for her teammate and the gold medal favorite, Erin Jackson, after Jackson slipped at the trials race, landing her a third place finish. Bowe made headlines again when she became a flagbearer for the opening ceremony after Team USA bobsledder Elana Meyers-Taylor, who was previously chosen as one of Team USA's two flagbearers, tested positive for COVID-19 and was unable to walk in the ceremony. This is Bowe's second individual medal in three Olympics.

Team USA women's hockey lost the gold-medal match against Canada, bringing home the silver. This was the sixth gold medal match between the US and Canada since the event was added to the Olympics in 1998. The US won gold in two of those six match-ups; 1998 and 2018. Canada has won gold in the other four match-ups, as well as in 2006 when they went up against Sweden after the US settled for bronze.

In other Team USA news, alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin received her third DNF (did not finish) of the 2022 Olympic Games. Shiffrin arrived at the Olympics a favorite for multiple gold medals and will be leaving with no individual medals. Her last chance to medal will come in the mixed team parallel event this weekend, where Team USA isn't a favorite to medal, but has a chance to make the podium.

Finally, in Olympic news, figure skater and gold medal favorite Kamila Valieva finished fourth in the women's individual event, just missing the podium by a hair. The 15-year-old representing the Russian Olympic Committee has found herself the center of many news stories in the past week as the center of a doping scandal. A drug test taken in December of 2021 turned up positive for a banned substance which can increase endurance. After a hearing by the Court for Arbitration of Sport (CAS), it was decided that Valieva would be allowed to compete in the individual competition pending the results of her investigation, but the medal ceremonies would be altered. The team event ceremony was cancelled and if Valieva had medaled in the individual event, that ceremony would have been cancelled as well. This was decided because, if Valieva's investigation resulted in her disqualification, any medal standings she is involved in will be altered to reflect her disqualification. Luckily for the athletes, because Valieva missed the podium they were able to have the medal ceremony.

The medal standings are as follows:

1. Norway -- 14 gold, 7 silver, 8 bronze, 29 total

2. Russian Olympic Committee -- 5 gold, 9 silver, 12 bronze, 26 total

3. Germany -- 10 gold, 7 silver, 5 bronze, 22 total

4. United States -- 8 gold, 8 silver, 5 bronze, 21 total

5. Canada -- 4 gold, 5 silver, 11 bronze, 20 total

02/16/2022 Update:

Two new medals for Team USA!

Freestyle skier Alex Hall brought home a gold medal in men's slopestyle. Hall, who also competed in the 2018 Games, earned his first Olympic medal after just one run where he recieved a score of 90.01/ No other skier crossed the 90-point threshold in the next two runs.

In the same event, freestyle skier Nick Goepper won the silver medal. Goepper is a third-time Olympian, having won bronze in Sochi 2014 and silver in PyeongChang 2018, both for the slopestyle event. The skiers were facing rough conditions throughout their runs and Goepper said he was surprised he got as high of a score as he did after a not-perfect run.

In other Olympic news, Team USA lost their shootout with Slovakia 3-2 in the men's hockey quarterfinal on Tuesday. This stunning elimination marks the third year in a row that USA men's hockey will leave the Olympics without hardware, their last medal having been a silver medal won in Vancouver 2010. Team USA men's hockey hasn't won an Olympic gold medal since the "Miracle on Ice" in 1980.

The medal standings are as follows:

1. Norway -- 13 gold, 7 silver, 8 bronze, 28 total

2. Russian Olympic Committee -- 4 gold, 8 silver, 12 bronze, 24 total

3. Germany -- 10 gold, 6 silver, 4 bronze, 20 total

4. United States -- 8 gold, 7 silver, 4 bronze, 19 total

5. Canada -- 3 gold, 4 silver, 11 bronze, 18 total

02/15/2022 Update:

I took a few days off from updating and after my well-needed break, there's a lot of medal updates and news to be shared!

Team USA has been racking up the medals in the past few days. We've won two gold medals, courtesy of speedskater Erin Jackson and bobsledder Kaillie Humphries. Jackson won the gold in the women's 500m, becoming the first Black woman to win a speedskating medal at the winter Olympics, and Humphries won gold in the women's monobob. The women's monobob event at the 2022 Olympics was the inaugural Olympic monobob event, making Humphries the first person to win monobob gold at the Olympics.

Team USA also has an additional silver medals. Bobsledder Elana Meyers-Taylor earned a silver medal in the women's monobob event, making her the first person to win monobob silver at the Olympics.

Team USA's three new bronze medals were earned by freestyle skier Megan Nick, ice dancers Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donahue, and the men's speedskating team. Nick's bronze in women's aerials comes after fellow American and Olympic veteran Ashley Caldwell couldn't stick her landing and missed the podium. This was Nick's Olympic debut.

Hubbell and Donahue had previously skated in the rhythm dance of the figure skating team event to help Team USA win a silver medal. The duo had previously announced their plan to retire after this season, making the Olympic ice dance competition the last competition of their 10-year partnership. This marks the fifth Olympics in a row that Americans have medalled; Tanith Belbin [White] and Ben Agosto earned silver in 2006, Meryl Davis and Charlie White earned silver in 2010, Davis and White won gold in 2014, and Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani got silver in 2018.

The men's speedskaing won in the team pursuit, but it came with a host of roadblocks. Team member Casey Dawson tested positive for COVID-19 in January, making him unable to travel to Beijing with the rest of Team USA. After around 45 COVID-19 tests he finally got the consecutive four negative tests needed to join his fellow athletes, but his luggage was lost on one of three flights he took to get to China. Dawson had packed his skating boots and uniform in his carry-on bag, but his blades were in his bag. Luckily, he used the same kind of blades as Latvian skater Haralds Silovs, who had an extra pair he lent to Dawson for Dawson's first event. That kind of sportsmanship is what the Olympics are all about. Don't worry, Dawson's suitcase was eventually found.

In other Olympic news, the Court for Arbitration of Sport (CAS) announced their decision on Kamila Valieva's case early Monday morning. It was decided that the 15-year-old skater would be allowed to compete, but should Valieva win a medal there will be no medal ceremony, nor will there be a ceremony for the team event, in which Valieva helped the Russian Olympic Committee win a silver medal. After a drug test from December 2021 came back positive for a banned substance, Valieva's participation at the 2022 Olympics was called into question. The International Testing Agency (ITA) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) appealed a decision by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) that lifted the provisional suspension they had imposed on Valieva, allowing her to compete in the women's individual competition. While Valieva is allowed to compete, her case is still being investigated and any standings in which she is a medalist are unofficial until a decision on her case is reached, at which time it will be decided if her wins are invalid.

Several members of the figure skating community have condemned the decision to allow her to compete, including Olympic gold medalist Tara Lipinski and Olympian Johnny Weir (both commentators for NBC) and Olympian turned figure skating coach Adam Rippon.

The medal standings are as follows:

1. Norway — 12 gold, 7 silver, 7 bronze, 26 total

2. Russian Olympic Committee — 4 gold, 7 silver, 9 bronze, 20 total

3. Germany — 9 gold, 6 silver, 3 bronze, 18 total

4. United States — 7 gold, 6 silver, 4 bronze, 17 total

5. Canada — 2 gold, 4 silver, 11 bronze, 17 total

02/12/2022 Update:

Team USA didn't go without winning a medal for long!

Snowboarders Nick Baumgartner and Lindsey Jacobellis brought home the gold in the mixed team snowboard cross event. This marks Jacobellis' second gold medal at the 2022 Games and the third medal of her Olympic career. This is Baumgartner's first medal in his Olympic career as he qualified for the 2010, 2014, and 2018 Games, but failed to medal.

In other Olympic news, French ice dancers Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron set a new world record in the rhythm dance early this morning. The four-time world champions earned a score of 90.83, surpassing for former highest score by over four points. Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov of the Russian Olympic Committee also surpassed the former record-holding score, earning a score of 88.85. The former record was held by Madison Hubbel and Zachary Donahue of the United States with a score of 86.56, earned in the rhythm dance of the team figure skating event in the 2022 Olympics.

The medal standings are as follows:

Norway -- 8 gold, 3 silver, 6 bronze, 17 total

Germany -- 8 gold, 5 silver, 1 bronze, 14 total

Austria -- 4 gold, 6 silver, 4 bronze, 14 total

Russian Olympic Committee -- 3 gold, 4 silver, 6 bronze, 13 total

Canada -- 1 gold, 4 silver, 8 bronze, 13 total

Team USA is currently in sixth place with 5 gold, 5 silver, and 1 bronze.

02/11/2022 Update:

Team USA didn't win any medals yesterday, but that doesn't mean the day was uneventful.

Snowboarder and five-time Olympian Shaun White had the last run of his career in the men's halfpipe finals. White was hoping to defend his gold medal from PyeongChang 2018, but fell during his run and ended in fourth place, just missing the podium. White, also known as the Flying Tomato due to his ability to perform amazing jumps and his red hair, has competed in every Olympic Games since Turin 2006 and has medaled in three out of those five: Turin, Vancouver, and Pyeongchang. All of his medals are gold medals.

Alpine Skier Mikaela Shiffrin also competed last night. Shiffrin skied in the women's super-G after failing to finish her runs in the giant slalom and slalom earlier this week. While Shiffrin finished her run in the super-G, it still wasn't enough to land on the podium and she ended in ninth place. Shiffrin is taking it in stride, though, and she's excited to have skied a good run and finished the course. Shiffrin will have two more chances to get a medal before the Games end in the women's downhill and women's alpine combined events.

In other Olympic news, the International Testing Agency (ITA) has confirmed that the issue that held up the figure skating team event medal ceremony was a positive drug test from ROC's 15-year-old figure skating phenom Kamila Valieva. While the sample was collected in December of 2021 and Valieva has been testing negative at the Olympics, the surfacing of a positive test requires her participation at the 2022 Olympics to be called into question. The ITA announced Valieva's case would be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). In this hearing, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will challenge the decision from the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) to lift Valieva's provisional suspension. The drug Valieva tested positive for is used to treat angina and can be used to enhance athletic performance by causing their heart to work more efficiently, which would increase endurance. It's unclear when the decision from the hearing will be released, but the decision will be made before the start of the women's individual competition, which Valieva is slated to compete in.

The medal standings are as follows:

Norway -- 6 gold, 3 silver, 5 bronze, 14 total

Austria -- 4 gold, 6 silver, 4 bronze, 14 total

Russian Olympic Committee -- 2 gold, 4 silver, six bronze, 12 total

Canada -- 1 gold, 4 silver, 7 bronze, 12 total

Germany -- 7 gold, 4 silver, 0 bronze, 11 total

Team USA is currently in seventh place with 4 gold, 5 silver, 1 bronze.

02/10/2022 Update:

After an eventful day, Team USA is racking up the hardware.

In freestyle skiing, Team USA won the gold medal in the mixed team aerials in an upset with Team China, who had been the favorite to win. The win was largely thanks to a mind-blowing jump from 2021 world silver medalist Chris Lillis. This is Team USA's first medal in aerials the 2010 Vancouver Games.

Snowboarder Chloe Kim defended her gold medal in the women's halfpipe, securing her spot on the podium with a score of 94.00. Her win was earned by an error-free performance in her first run that followed what Kim called "the worst practice ever." Having landed her first run, Kim was able to have some fun and try more complex tricks in her second and third runs, one of which was a 1260. Kim fell in her second and third runs, but it didn't hinder her win. Kim is the first woman in history to defend an Olympic halfpipe title.

Last but not least, figure skater Nathan Chen won gold in the individual men's figure skating competition, unseating the previously two-time and reigning Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan. Chen had a good start after he came in first in the short program, earning a record-breaking score of 113.97, but his win was cemented by his strong performance in the free skate with a program set to a medley of music by Elton John that was heard in John's biopic, "Rocketman." Chen's win comes four years after he came in fifth place at the 2018 PyeongChang Games after a disappointing and disastrous performance in the individual and team event men's short programs.

In other Olympic and figure skating news, Yuzuru Hanyu's attempt at a quadruple Axel jump was the first attempt in an ISU competition that received the base value of a quad Axel. The jump was not clean, as Hanyu both underrotated the jump (which reduced his base value score) and fell on the landing of the jump. Even though it wasn't a clean jump, it was still the first attempt on the jump that was not downgraded to a triple Axel, meaning Hanyu's attempt marks the first time a quadruple Axel has been performed in competition.

The medal standings are as follows:

1. Austria -- 4 gold, 5 silver, 4 bronze, 13 total

2. Norway -- 5 gold, 3 silver, 4 bronze, 12 total

3. Canada -- 1 gold, 4 silver, 7 bronze, 12 total

4. Russian Olympic Committee -- 2 gold, 3 silver, 6 bronze, 11 total

5. United States -- 4 gold, 5 silver, 1 bronze, 10 total

02/09/2022 Update:

What an incredible day to be Team USA!

Team USA got its first gold medal of the 2022 Games on Feb 8 when snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis won the women's snowboard cross event. Jacobellis became known around the world after the 2006 Turin games, where she held a strong lead in the snowboard cross final but fell after showboating in the home stretch, earning the silver medal while her opponent won gold. Every Olympics since then, Jacobellis would make it to the final race of the snowboard cross event and would be in the position to win gold, but would lose it at the last minute. Many wondered if Jacobellis would ever see redemption from her 2006 mishap. After five Olympics, Jacobellis finally has her gold. At age 36, Jacobellis is now the oldest American woman to win a winter Olympic gold, surpassing Kikkan Randall, who won gold in cross-country skiing at the age of 35 in the 2018 PyeongChang Games. Jacobellis is also the oldest snowboarder to medal at the Olympics.

Team USA also gained another silver medal. Freestyle skier Colby Stevenson took home the silver in men's big air. Stevenson wasn't favored to medal, but from near the bottom of the pack to the podium after trying a new jump involving three flips and four and a half spins. Stevenson had never attempted this jump at all, not even in practice, but his decision to try it in Beijing became the miracle he needed to succeed.

In other Olympic news, the medal ceremony for the team figure skating event has been postponed amid what IOC spokesman Mark Adams is calling a situation which arose at short notice and "requires legal action with the ISU (International Skating Union)." According to Adams, Olympics officials and the ISU are consulting with lawyers to resolve the issue. Adams also said the IOC will give an update on Feb 9.

While nothing official has been said by the ISU or IOC about the cause of the delay, USA Today has reported that the cause of the delay was a positive drug test of one member of the team representing the Russian Olympic Committee. The name of the person who tested positive has not been released, although many online users are speculating it's Kamila Valieva, the 15-year-old who just made history as the first woman to land a quadruple jump at the Olympics. If the Russian Olympic Committee were to be disqualified, Team USA would take the gold with Team Japan earning silver and Team Canada being bumped up to bronze.

The medal standings are as follows:

Russian Olympic Committee -- 2 gold, 3 silver, 6 bronze, 11 total

Norway -- 4 gold, 2 silver, 4 bronze, 10 total

Austria -- 2 gold, 4 silver, 4 bronze, 10 total

Germany -- 5 gold, 3 silver, 0 bronze, 8 total

Canada -- 1 gold, 2 silver, 5 bronze, 8 total

Team USA is currently in ninth place with 1 gold, 5 silver, and 1 bronze.

02/08/2022 Update:

Another day, another medal.

Cross-country skier Jessie Diggins won Team USA's first-ever medal in the individual sprint when she won bronze on Feb 7. This is just four years after Diggins helped win Team USA's first-ever cross country skiing medal in the women's team sprint. The record was marked as the NBC commentator gave the famous call, "Here comes Diggins! Here comes Diggins!"

Team USA also gained a silver medal in the men's super-G, earned by Ryan Cochran-Siegle 50 years after his mom won gold for the slalom winter Olympics in Sapporo. Both mother and son come from the "Skiing Cochrans" family of Olympians.

In other Team USA news, men's figure skater Nathan Chen broke the world record for the highest short program score during the individual men's short program on Feb 7. The previous record, held by Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu, was 111.82. Hanyu got that score at the 2020 Four Continents Championships on Feb 7, 2020, exactly two years prior to the Olympic men's short program. Chen's record was achieved after his short program to "La Bohème" by Charles Aznavour earned a score of 113.97. This amazing feat comes just four years after Chen had what he calls a "disastrous" performance in the team event and individual short programs at his Olympic debut in PyeongChang 2018.

The medal standings are as follows:

1. Russian Olympic Committee -- 2 gold, 3 silver, 5 bronze, 10 total

2. Norway -- 3 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze, 8 total

3. Netherlands -- 3 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze, 7 total

4. Italy -- 2 gold, 4 silver, 1 bronze, 7 total

5. Austria -- 2 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze, 7 total

Team USA is currently in twelfth place with 4 silver medals and 1 bronze medal.

02/07/2022 Update:

Team USA has another medal! The US figure skating team won the silver medal in the team event of figure skating last night. This is Team USA's first-ever silver medal in team figure skating, as in the previous two Olympics of the event's existence (Sochi 2014 and PyeongChang2018) the team won bronze. The silver medal was cemented in part by the outstanding performances of Nathan Chen and Madison Chock/Evan Bates, both of whom are expected to be dominant figures in their individual and ice dance competitions in the coming days. Team USA was represented in the team event by Nathan Chen and Vincent Zhou -- men's, Karen Chen -- women's, Alexa Knierim/Brandon Frazier -- pairs, and Madison Hubbell/Zachary Donahue and Madison Chock/Evan Bates -- ice dance.

In other Team USA figure skating news, US Figure Skating announced last night that Vincent Zhou had tested positive for COVID-19 and was undergoing more testing and COVID protocols to confirm his status. On Feb 7, Zhou announced that that he would be unable to compete in the individual men's competition at the Beijing 2022 Olympics due to testing positive for COVID-19.

Team USA also came close to a gold medal in men's snowboarding slopestyle last night. Red Gerard, the breakout gold medalist from PyeongChang 2018, was a favorite to win gold in Beijing, but after a rough run in the finals he ended in fourth place, barely missing the podium.

The medal standings are as follows:

1. Russian Olympic Committee -- 2 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze, 7 total

2. Canada -- 1 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze, 6 total

3. Netherlands -- 2 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze, 5 total

4. Italy -- 1 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze, 5 total

5. China -- 2 gold, 2 silver, 0 bronze, 4 total

Team USA is tied with France for twelfth with 3 silver medals.

02/06/2022 Update:

It's day 2 of the Olympics and Team USA has a medal! Julia Marino won Team USA's first medal, a silver medal in women's snowboarding slopestyle. The gold medal winner, Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, won New Zealand's first Winter Olympic gold medal. Jamie Anderson, the two-time defending Olympic champion from the USA, came into the competition as a strong contender for the podium and many people expected her to be the first woman to win three straight gold medals in snowboarding, but struggled throughout the competition and ended up finishing in ninth place.

Team USA won another silver medal yesterday as skier Jaelin Kauf came in second place in women's moguls.

The medal standings are as follows:

1. Russian Olympic Committee -- 1 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze, 5 total

2. Norway -- 2 gold, 1 bronze, 3 total

3. Austria -- 2 silver, 1 bronze, 3 total

3. Italy -- 2 silver, 1 bronze, 3 total

4. Sweden -- 2 gold, 2 total

5. Germany -- 1 gold, 1 silver, 2 total

5. Netherlands -- 1 gold, 1 silver, 2 total

Team USA is currently in seventh place with 2 silver medals.

02/05/2022 Update:

With the opening ceremony of the Olympics having come and gone, the Olympics are officially in full swing and countries are already starting to rack up the hardware. The first gold medal of the 2022 Games went to Team Norway's Therese Johoug in the women's 15-meter skiathalon. Winning the silver and bronze medals were Team ROC's Natalia Nepryaeva and Team Austria's Teresa Stadlober. Team USA's Jessie Diggins, one of the stars of PyeongChang 2018, finished sixth.

In Team USA news, bobsled star Elana Meyers Taylor is out of COVID isolation. Meyers Taylor was set to be one of Team USA's flagbearers in the opening ceremony, but had to back out when she tested positive for COVID-19. Speedskater Brittany Bowe walked in place of Meyers Taylor. If Meyers Taylor continues to test negative, she should be ready to go for the start of the women's monobob competition, the first of the women's bobsled events, on Feb 13. Meyers Taylor is a gold medal favorite in both women's monobob and women's two-man.

The figure skating team event kicked off on Feb 3 with the men's short, rhythm dance, and pairs short. Nathan Chen took first in the short with a score of 111.71, his new personal best short program score. This is quite the turnaround from PyeongChang 2018, where Chen had disastrous skates in both the team and individual short program. Ice dancers Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue finished first in the rhythm dance competition and pairs skaters Alexa Knierim And Brandon Frazier finished third in the pairs short.

The medal standings are as follows:

1. Norway -- 2 gold, 2 total

2. Slovenia -- 1 gold, 1 bronze, 2 total

3. Italy -- 2 silver, 2 total

4. Canada -- 1 silver, 1 bronze, 2 total

4. ROC -- 1 silver, 1 bronze, 2 total

5. China -- 1 gold, 1 total

5. Netherlands -- 1 gold, 1 total

5. Sweden -- 1 gold, 1 total
